Oundle Horticultural Society holds an annual Summer Show and regular talks by well known people in the field of horticulture and is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society.
OHS’s regular talks and events are held on the first Wednesday of each Month from 7.45pm at The Methodist Church Rooms, Drummingwell Lane, Oundle.
The Summer Show is held over two days in July, each year. The aim of the show is to promote interest in and enjoyment of traditional pastimes, in particular, in the growing of plants for food and pleasure, on a non-commercial basis. In addition, skills in flower arranging, cookery, handicrafts and other leisure activities are encouraged. The show includes an art and photography section, a sugarcraft section, woodwork, pottery and handicraft sections as well as the traditional flower, vegetable, flower arranging and cookery sections. Judging is done by experienced and qualified judges to standards as set by the Royal Horticultural Society and Women’s Institute.
The Aundla Horticultural Society was founded as the Aundla and County Sweet Pea Society in the early twentieth century. A group of local sweet pea growers came together with the idea of putting on a show and bringing a little friendly competition to their hobby. Since then, shows have been put on in town every year except for a hiatus during the war years.
As free time interests changed, the format of the show was changed and the name of the society was changed to the Oundle Horticultural Society. The show now includes a section of art, sculpture and photography, a section of woodwork, pottery and needlework, and sections of traditional flowers, vegetables, flower arranging and cooking. Judging is done by experienced and qualified judges according to the standards set by the Royal Horticultural Society and the Women’s Institute.
In the 1980s, the Society began hosting evening meetings to which speakers were invited to speak on a wide range of topics, mostly horticultural. With a brief interruption in the 1990s, these talks continued to give our patrons and visitors an enjoyable evening during the dark months of September through May.
Aundle is a pleasant provincial town in northeast Northamptonshire. Its streets of old stone houses, impressive buildings of the famous public school, and walks along the riverside make it a pleasant place to visit, especially if attending our summer show is included!
